| railroad park - dunsmuir, ca. |
Just south of Dunsmuir, CA at the foot of Castle Crags off Interstate 5 are 18 cabooses, a box car and a dining car, sitting on railroad tracks circling a swimming pool. Southern Pacific, Santa Fe and Great Northern, these cabooses are an opportunity to sample the life of a railroader without sacrificing the comforts of home.
The setting is spectacular, a place you would want to stop the car anyway. The Crags are really something and the park sits aside Castle Creek in the midst of this mountain valley. Really special. |

If you go in toward the end of summer, it will be warm enough to consider a dip in the pool before dinner. Although you are at couple thousand feet of elevation, Redding is only 45 miles away. |
| Try the Club Car. This is not downtown Seattle faire but not bad considering you are half way between Redding and Mt. Shasta. After a wine, its just a short walk home. |

The walk home is on wide paved roadwaysand even without the fun of the trains, the sound of the creek, a bit of a warm breeze and The Crags overhead makes this a hard place to beat |

Railroad Park and the Caboose Motel is one of our favorite spots. If you ever find yourself driving I-5, this is a comfortable mid-point between Portland/Seattle and San Francisco - in our opinion, well worth the trip. |
